I have almost all of Brian Tracy CD and I really enjoy them a lot. I have a bunch of them on self-improvement
As for business card, I wouldn’t need them because I am not very social in the real world and don’t have “business friends”, just gamers!
Hi Cath,
Thanks for this helpful post. I’m definitely checking out the free CD. Like Sean, I’m not very social, so I don’t really need a business card either.
Thanks for visiting me on my blog recently too. And the tip on the Women Bloggers list.
Jocelyn
I need business cards and I personally advocate getting out and about in the real world.
I had never been to a sales meeting before. I had never spoken in public. I was a shy hermit.
Then I was invited to a business breakfast. I thought there’d be a couple of people there and I knew the guy who invited me.
Turns out there were 30 people. And everyone had to stand up and talk about their business for 1 minute.
I s*it my knickers if you’ll pardon the French.
And I was stuttery, incoherent, and struggled for about 10 seconds to think of something intelligent.
I was red-faced, ashamed, and dreadful.
I decided to confront my own fears and go back the following week. This time I prepared a script, and shakingly read it out – still stuttery, unconvincing, but marginally better than the week before.
I got better. Soon I didn’t need a script.
I got better when I met clients. I started going to networking events. I’m still to this day not an agressive networker – prefer to meet 3 ot 4 people and have a quality chat. I don’t sell, I try and make an acquaintance – even completely unrelated to what I do.
Once you’ve done networking – and I recommend the breakfast meetings – you develop as a person. You develop confidence.
You get better – even when it doesn’t come natural.
After 4 years of doing this, I arranged a seminar in aid of a charity I liked, got together with a guy called Andy Bounds and a couple of others, and got 70 paying guests to a seminar on “Cause Related Marketing” at Goodison Park.
To go from stuttery, shy to addressing an invited audience of professionals – and sharing the same stage as the legnedary Andy Bounds was an achievement.
I now make sure I do at least one “scary” event a year. I’m usually not the best presenter, but it really helps you develop.
Business cards are a must. At some events, they encourage business card swapping as a massive 2 minute exercise. Getting 70 business cards at an event building your database.
Always worthwhile – particularly with a business card scanner so they’re popped straight into your database.
That’s a long way to say business cards are useful – if you meet people, you’ll get one in return and your database will grow.
Hi Sean – I absolutely love Brian Tracy to. His book on time management is brilliant. I’m naturally unorganised and it’s even helped me. And his sales stuff is excellent. We get his DVD’s as it’s far cheaper than going on training courses.
Jocelyn – you are welcome. And do get the free CD. I know I’m going to.
Ian – like you, I couldn’t live without business cards. I even leave them when I pay in a restaurant. I don’t know who does yours, but I’ve tried a lot of places and Vista Print has been the best quality. I also get leaflets and postcards from them, as you can use their layouts and designs and tweak bits to suit yourself. It’s dead easy. And they always seem to have offers on!
