Business: Do You Think You Know It All?
March 1, 2008
“I know that I am intelligent, because I know that I know nothing.” Socrates.
Do you think you know all you need to know about business? Maybe it’s time to think again. Things change so fast and there’s always something new to learn. But, don’t just limit yourself to learning about business. Things that inspire you and make you laugh can also go a long way towards improving your business and your life.
Here’s a few things I learned this week:
Giving Rice Can Be Addictive: If you’re interested in improving your vocabulary and helping those in poorer countries, you should check out: GiveRice.com. Just don’t blame me if you can’t stop messing about on it. And don’t use some of the words you discover on there in real life conversation or you’ll look a real prat.
Entrepreneurs Can Be A..holes: It’s great to bang on about the positive qualities entrepreneurs have isn’t it? It makes us feel smart and superior. But entrepreneurs can be real a..holes sometimes, including you and me. Check out this post by Men With Pens and see if you recognise your dark side.
After that – read something funny to cheer yourself up. Some Kids Learn About Business Too Soon: Naomi Dunford’s son already understands the benefits of outsourcing.
Learn From A Brave Woman: JEMi’s blog – In My Heel’s. JEMi is only in her early twenties and her husband died a year ago. And now she is blogging to help and inspire others.
Still Think You Know It All: Check out this Isaac Asimov article – What Is Intelligence Anyway?

Got something to say?

Food for thought indeed. Particularly loved the Asimov article.
When you know a particular field well, it’s easy to think you’re great and become full of your own importance. But that underestimates others.
I’m not practical at all. I don’t really care what goes on under the engine of a car, and greatly admire those who can strip and engine and put it back together again.

Hi Ian – that was a great article wasn’t it? I agree, intelligence tests are biased. I score highly on them, but it’s an unfair way to measure people. I’m absolutely hopeless at many things and I bet the people who put the tests together are too.

Hi Catherine,
As you and my other readers know, I like JEMi’s blog. She’s a young woman, who’s faced more in her life than some many times older. To write about it, has been a brave move on her part, but for that, I admire her.
The Asimov and Naomi pieces were good reads that made me laugh.
The MwP piece made me think. Do entrepreneurs really need what could be construed as negative qualities to succeed?
Unfortunately, the GiveRice.com took me to a dead link.
Thanks for sharing.

OMG Barbara – thank you so much. I did not realise – I had the wrong link in there – it’s actually free rice. You have to try it, it’s excellent.
They were great articles weren’t they? On the Men With Pens One – I have to say, I did cringe a lot when I read it, because it explored many negative qualities that entrepreneurs do share that we don’t like to talk about. The impatience one was definitely a big one for me.
Hi Catherine
I love that Socrates quote. Really sums up life, I think. So many people claim to be experts these days but it goes against the grain of what I have found about life, which is that it’s a lot of trial and error and that’s the fun of it!
Have saved the entrepreneurs can be assholes article to read when I have time. It sounds funny. I’ll let you know what I think when I read it.
Cheers
Kelly

I went back to GiveRice.com. That is contagious. I ended up giving 1100 grains of rice today. I’ll go back and give more.

It says in the FAQ that it is difficult to get above 48, so you know what I’m like, I want to prove it wrong. But, I haven’t got above 44 so far. It’s v difficult.
Catherine, I really appreciate the veracity of your advice. OK, I’ve been playing FreeRice.com and I’m hooked! I’ll read the rest of your links if I can tear myself away from it, but that’s a big “if!”
