Sometimes, It’s The Best Thing To Do……

April 8, 2008

Just incase any of you were wondering if I’d dropped dead – or even hoping I had – tough, I’m still breathing. I’ve taken a long weekend off blogging and working, because I have pneumonia. Ok – so it’s probably just a bug, but it feels like pneumonia.

Sure, I have a ridiculous amount of posts in draft that I just need to edit and add pics to. But the truth is, I don’t feel like f…ing well adding pics or editing anything.

Now, a lot of people might thing that’s lazy and unprofessional. But, in the past, I’ve carried on slogging my guts out, when I’ve been so ill I felt like dying. And about three years ago, I actually threw up on my computer screen, because I was too stubborn to admit that I felt too ill to work – not exactly the coolest thing to do in front of your staff.

Do you carry on trying to work when you feel like shit warmed up? Have colleagues ever threatened to throttle you because you take your fluey germs to work to pass onto them? If so, maybe it’s time to take a break.

Normal schedule will resume shortly.

I was wondering where / how you were. Taking care of yourself is the best policy and not remotely unprofessional.

We’ll be here when you’re better and back.

    Hi Catherine,

Based on your email, I knew you were sick, and actually haven’t been feeling 100% for some time now.

It is time to take care of yourself, and do whatever it takes to get the bug out of your system.

You’ll really like the NBOTW for this week. I was thinking of you as I wrote the introductory post..

Email me if there’s anything I can do for you.

I would definitely take a break if I could, but I can’t remember the last time I had that luxury. So I sometimes have to listen to coworkers make comments like “you sound like you’re dying,” as if I didn’t know.

Hi Joanna – Thank you. Am hoping I get something done today though. Am on Arvon course all next week so need to prewrite some posts. The don’t have Internet access there!!

Thanks Barbara – I’ll check it out. I think I have an infection – same kind of symptoms as last autumn. But have been waiting for the decent doctor to come back from holiday.

Hunter – that is really bad. If you’re really ill you should be entitled to time off. And you’re not really much use at work if you’re ill anyway.

  5. Brett Legree on April 8th, 2008 11:44 am

Cath – hang in there. I know how you feel, I’ve had the bubonic plague myself for the last few days and it really stinks. I have so much work to do, both here at work and at home, and on my blog.

Take care of you first… we’ll be here when you feel better ;)

Rest! That’s the only way to get better. Don’t write. Don’t edit. Don’t think.

Look at it this way: will the world fall apart if you don’t post, return phone calls, do whatever else? No. But you might, if you keep going.

Back to bed, now! * this is my mummy voice, just so you know*

I figured you were either ill or something urgent had come up with your business/family. Perfectly acceptable reasons to leave the blog alone for a bit.

    I hope you feel better.

Oh you poor thing! I had the flu and I can’t kick the cough, but thankfully it didn’t go into pneumonia. I hope you are feeling 100% soon!

    Cath:
I didn’t know where to submit this comment, sonce your comment link at the top of the page said it was no longer available or disconnected…something…In the mean time, here is the review I wrote at SU on your About Me page. I hope it cheers you during your time of illness. I would love to add you to my friends list at SU.

“I like this lovely lady from Northern England!!! This is one woman that heard the call to “put your big girl pants on and deal with it!”…Spunky…witty, great info, guidance and perspective….Cath Lawson is definately bold…I like that in a gal!

Check out her blog post on SU freaks…you go girl! (She is no longer taking comments on this post due to the spamming and negative comments she received from the people she wrote on…this is too bad.) Cath: I have been at SU about a month, quickly gained friends and fans…got negative reviews as soon as my fan base started increasing. Important to use the “flag this member” when this happens. Don’t know if this brings these people to SU powers that be attention…but do it anyways….then block them so they can’t see you on SU anymore.”

Get well…then keep it coming Cath!!!

Hi Brett – I hope you’re recovering from the bubonic plague. It sounds even more impressive than pneumonia.

Thanks Kelly – took your advice and had a good rest.

Thanks Mrs M – am feeling heaps better already.

Hi Debbie – This is probably a massive exaggeration on my part. Coughs from flu can take weeks to get shot of can’t they?

Thanks Amy – That was a really nice review. I’ll message you on SU. Flagging helped get rid of some of the reviews created by bots, but not the other crap. Hey – maybe I should join the SU anti-spam group!

Hi Nicole – Sorry Askimet grabbed your post – don’t know why – maybe cos of the caps. I definitely feel less lazy now. It’s easier to justify resting when a Dr tells you to. Thanks.

    Cath,

How dare you give up the snow, floods, persistent pneumonia and lack of global warming in Northern England and jet of to Australia?

Oh. I answered my own question.

    Hey Cath,

What great news to see you got the Visa. Wow, so cool. Where will you be headed here in this amazing country? I understand if you don’t want to make it public knowledge since you seem to have a pretty illiterate stalker here too. LOL

Maybe we should hire the gun of the Pen Men to mowe him/her down.
Please get better and don’t worry about the “requoted rubbish you write anyway” LMAO, sorry, couldn’t resist. Looking forward to seeing you back on track when the health allows.

Hi Ian – I know, it’s criminal isn’t it. I wish I’d just over a year ago to be honest. It’s not just for the weather though – there’s so many other reasons, not least that it will be a better place to bring up my kids than where I’m living now.

I would’ve added – escape from idiots, but as you’ve noticed, they already know I have a blog.

By the way – as I’m feeling a bit better, I’ll review your ebook today as promised.

  16. cathlawson on April 9th, 2008 5:34 am

Hi Monika – you made me spit my coffee! Am running out of books to plagiarise from – think I might have to resort to using Hunter’s rehashing machine.

Haven’t got the visa yet – but meet all the requirements for the non-state nominated business one, which is just as well, as I have no idea where I want to live. But, I’m leaning towards Perth.

Don’t worry about the illiterate stalkers. Unfortunately – I’ll have to give them my address and phone number when I get over there anyway – that’s the trouble with having kids with an idiot.

We’ve introced a new policy. Whereas all reactive IT support incidents are included in the monthly charge, vomiting on your keyboard is a chargeable exclusion.

I know how you feel. I spent most of March (my month off from my contract work) bad sick with the flu, followed by a cold. Didn’t get much of anything done that I planned.

I hope that your move will be everything you hope it to be!

Thanks Mike. I hope you’re feeling better now. It’s a bugger that you were ill on your month off.

  23. Ian Denny on April 9th, 2008 7:48 pm

    Mike / Cath,

I am amazed at how often I hear of people deciding to take a break, and they suddenly become ill.

Is it because when we’re stressed, we can mentally repel illness? And when we mentally switch off, so do those anti-bodies?

One of our engineers is an amazing hard-worker. We have to force him to take his holidays and he always carries forward a few days.

Very rarely he’s sick. But when he is, you have to forcibly eject him from the office because he won’t stay off.

And whenever he takes a break, he often comes back to tell us that he was ill.

I’m feeling a bit ropey right now, but because I’m really busy, I feel able to fight it, and so far have succeeded in avoiding the worst symptoms.

Anyway, Dr Nicole may be able to help on this one!

Is it true our attitude can somehow postpone the symptoms of illness or even let’s us ride through the symptoms until the virus has run its course?

  24. cathlawson on April 9th, 2008 7:52 pm

Hi Ian – I didn’t take a break before I got ill this time. But, I know where you’re coming from. That has happened to me lots before too.

Not sure about the antibodies switching off when we’re stressed but Dr Nicole might know the answer.

Sorry you’re still feeling rough. Are you still taking as many pills? Still off the fags?

Hi Cath. Hope you rest up and recover from being sick.

It’s amazing how your cyber stalker puts so much energy into trolling your blog.

Your traffic stats & technorati rank demonstrate that you definitely know what you’re doing and have sound advice to offer. Keep up the great work.

Hi Sterling – thanks. I know – I keep banning their IP, and deleting their comments but they’re obviously using more than one computer and I’d hate to ban a range because that blocks so many readers. It’s ridiculous really, as I haven’t actually taken him to court for non-payment of maintenance (he hasn’t paid a penny in 3 and a half years), but this stalking has convinced me to do so.

Non-payment of maintenance is against the law in the UK, and I’m guessing this type of harrassment is too. I was just reading this case where a non-paying father was jailed for non-payment of maintenance. And as most of us know, these people who make threats and harrass people on the Internet leave an electronic trail right back to themselves that we can pass on to the police.

Thanks for your vote of confidence though Sterling. I love that I get a good bit of traffic now, but it’s been hard work. I think I’ve blogged on this domain for about a year now! And I’m really grateful to loyal supporters like yourself.

  27. Ian Denny on April 10th, 2008 6:17 am

Not off the fags! Been a roller-coaster of late. But the troughs have been fun too!

I am incredibly excited about stuff at the moment. Steve’s been brainwashing me about the secret. And I’ve let myself be indoctrinated.

And the b*gger’s been right. We had 3 very strong enquiries today for new retainer clients. I got an unexpected cheque in the post. Prospective clients seem to be chasing us for a change.

I haven’t got time to read the instructions for all the drugs I’m taking for the blood pressure and related stuff.

Despite the temperature, snotty nose etc, I feel more alive than I’ve done for a while.

I love the fact you’re thinking of Oz. Having a fag on the street with horizontal rain is getting me down.

I was speculating with Steve earlier – is it an age thing that the weather is becoming annoying? Are we getting cranky?

After dozens of winters, do we all reach a point where we can take no more? Or is it because of being in business – which too often consumes too much of your life, that you begin to think more of warmer climes?

Hi Ian – I haven’t managed to stop yet either. To be honest I haven’t tried. In fact, we went out a couple of weeks ago and I lit a fag in a pub by accident. Had forgotten about the smoking ban!

Re: the weather. I haven’t been able to cope with the winter for years. But I’m finding it more difficult since moving from office based to home based.

Am glad that you seem to be benefiting from watching The Secret. Think I will watch it again – would like an unexpected cheque too.
