Are You Lost In Social Networking?
August 1, 2008
Using some of the social networking sites, such as Twitter, Digg and StumbleUpon is one of the best ways to meet new people and network on the Internet.
But, I really get lost on some of the social networking sites. Some people tend to use different user names and pictures and it can be a real struggle to find some of the people you know.
Do you struggle to find people too? Then why not share your social networking profiles with others in this community by adding them in the comments section? It doesn’t matter whether you’ve been here hundreds of times or if it’s your first visit.
My Digg Username: Lafinachu
My Twitter Username: CathLawson
I’m banned from StumbleUpon, but leave your username, if you’re a member, so others can see them.

Got something to say?

I have an obsessive-compulsive type of personality, so I’m very much afraid of getting involved in Twitter and/or Plurk. I haven’t figured out how I would use those networks yet, but I am active in StumbleUpon and somewhat in Digg.
Here are my links, since you asked

Regarding StumbleUpon, can’t you just sign up with a new email address? I understand if you don’t feel like using StumbleUpon, though. For what it’s worth, they are removing some of their abusive users, so things are improving.

Great idea.
I don’t really use digg. I have an account, and I digg other people’s content when asked, but I’m not very active.

Darren Rowse is a very influential blogger. Too bad that less influential bloggers can’t get unbanned.

This is a great ida for a post, Cath.
I am loving Twitter right now and am a big fan of StumbleUpon, but don’t use Digg very much. I haven’t ventured in anywhere else because I do need a life off-line!

Problogger rececently did a series on building communities on Twitter, Plurk, etc…
I already spend too much time not getting work done and playing on social media, so I haven’t yet dived into all of these. I will however take a look at them in September and will come back to add you then.
As for being banned on SU - the same thing happened to Problogger yesterday - you might want to contact SU to get yourself unbanned.
Cheers,
Alex

Hi Cath - I’ve tried and I’ve failed. I just don’t GET the social network thing. I’ve joined most of them, mucked around a little, but couldn’t see the point. I suppose I may as well go and put my head in the oven (just kidding). (What did you do to poor ol’ StumbleUpon?)

Amazingly and very a stunning lack of originality I am timbrownson on all of them.
Like Vered though, I hardly ever use Digg and have actually disabled incoming e-mails.

Haven’t tried any of the social networking sites yet. I’m like Alex (who is my baby brother by the way,she says with a proud sisterly grin!) and don’t have enough hours in the day. You got banned from something?! Way cool! You go girl!!!
@Everyone - is there really any blogging benefit to these sites? Is it worthwhile finding a few more hours in the day?

I don’t use the social networking sites. I do include the Digg wiget on my blog to encourage some Digging, but I haven’t learned how to navigate my way around it yet. I’m not ready to jump into that arena just yet.
I’m curious to know what happened with Stumble…

I’m with Robin, I just don’t get it. I’ve played around a bit on Twitter, which I found so annoying my blood pressure got dangerously high. I couldn’t seem to get it to display any posts, mine included, after the first time I looked at it.
The rest of the social network scene just doesn’t interest me. Maybe because I don’t like most people very much?
I make my living on the ‘net, so its WORK. Even though I love my job, when I want to play I go find some of my real-world friends. LOL!

That’s why it’s so important to keep your brand consistent across varying networks! (It can be a pain trying to find someone). The social media space is a very, VERY large space and what you say is printed on the web forever! For business, (especially for business), you not only need to make yourself easily accessible across varying networks, but you also need to be consistent. (I don’t mean go out there and “sell”… Be social! After all, it is “social” media. But be consistent). Anyway, just my two cents
Here are my social networks:

I use Brad Pitt’s photo everywhere, so if you see that Brad Pitt has visited your StumbleUpon profile, I apologize for the initial excitement you felt. My complete list of social networking profiles is on my contact page:
http://bradbrown.com/?page_id=3
I love collecting friends, so feel free to add me on any that you’re a member of. I will say that out of the 16 places I have a profile, only Digg, Stumble, & Reddit seem to generate good traffic. There’s really not enough time in the day to be a prolific participant on more than 2-3 sites, and from what I’ve seen, the gains don’t warrant it.

I like Twitter and StumbleUpon and have Digg but don’t use it a lot. Social media can really eat into your day. I have select days I use Twitter and I find Stumbling easy because of the toolbar so I have a healthy size blog there. If you like writing or self improvement articles make sure you check out my collection.

There are so many social medial tools to keep up with that I think ultimately, it’s about finding the one’s that we’re each most comfortable with and sticking with those. I’m a member of Digg and have been for a while but I find Twitter easier to use… I’m only now starting to enjoy StumbleUpon a little better…
Anyway, my favorite has and always will be LinkedIn. FB is 2nd to that and then Twitter for it’s broadcasting/marketing potential.

I guess you don’t use it much, either. In any case, I am now following you.
On most/all social networking sites, I am either ariherzog or ariwriter.
To those who are confused by social networking, consider it both a proven method to enable a business to market itself via online word of mouth very quickly and a virtual extension of the office water cooler and the conversations that go back and forth, people asking people, “So, Jim, what are you up to?”
