Would You Sing To Your Customers?

November 12, 2008

I like to see businesses use interesting marketing techniques. And this guy had me laughing out loud. You’ve got to see his website to believe it.

As soon as you arrive at JimKukral.com, Jim will invite you to join his mailing list. And to persuade you to fill out your details, he’s offering to send you a free video of himself playing the ukelele and singing Happy Birthday to you, on your birthday. How could you turn him down?

And he’s not going to let you escape from his blog without making sure you come back either. At the end of each post, Jim has a very persuasive pic of his kids, literally begging you to sign up to his RSS feed.

The question is, is there such a thing as trying too hard? I don’t think those techniques would necessarily make me subscribe.

I doubt that it would make me subscribe as well. I’m one of those don’t make a big deal about my birthday folks. But I do like the novel ideas he has. It’s good inspiration to try something else out of the usual.

    That’s novel and funny :) . But no, I wouldn’t do that.

Hi Cath. So, is it your birthday today? Or did you send him a fake birthday to see him sing? :-) I went to his website to see what you were laughing about. Unless I missed something, it looks like the only option is to subscribe and then wait for my birthday which isn’t until April. I’m too impatient for that!

I don’t think this would be enough to get me to subscribe, even though I think he has a creative idea here. Maybe if it was a more regular “treat” than once a year. A thought that just occurred to me; I’m thinking that his subscriber count would only be a reflection of the “gimmick” rather than his service.

Oh, I forgot… I wouldn’t sing for my customers either. I’d go bankrupt if I did!

Hi Cath, I think people always appreciate an extra effort – when sellers try, buyers buy. Possibly, the vocally challenged (Davina and I, perhaps) would be even more persuasive singing our own praises. Don’t think I’m going to try it, though!

I pretty-much sing to everybody all the time anyway, something that started deep in childhood. Now woudl I dance for them? Perhaps.

Hi Vered – I guess it would depend a lot on the reader. I know it’s easy to go overboard and I don’t think I could pull something like that off. But I subscribed straight away. I love stuff like that and his kids were just too cute to ignore.

Hi Tom – I know the feeling re birthdays. I’ll be 40 on my next one so hopefully it will cheer me up.

Hi Avani – I think it’s only best to do what you feel comfortable doing isn’t it?

Hi Davina – I didn’t think until I’d filled in my details either. Looks like I’m going to have to wait until July.

You could do it in a kind of reverse way. You could run a video of you singing that starts when someone lands on your website. And you could have one of those buy me a pint widgets, so folk would have to pay you to stop.

Hi Brad – I like that quote – when sellers try, buyers buy. I’ll probably have to borrow it from you sometime.

Hi Jannie – Dancing would be different. My kids are always watching these dancing babies and stuff, so it could definitely work.

Hi Catherine – I think it’s always fascinating to see what some will do to gain readers and/or subscribers. His plan worked to some degree because you’re writing about it.

Would I do that? No. I can’t carry a tune, so I’d have to think of something else.

I wouldn’t sing, but I do like the idea of getting a reaction out of visitors – something different.

Hmmm… I’m going to have to think about that.

hehe, no I would never subscribe because of that tactic. It would get my attention for sure :)

If i sung to my customers, I wouldn’t have them long. I did check out his blog and the picture is cute, but yeah as Vered said, it didn’t make me want to subscribe, but it’s definitely memorable.
