Instead of giving half hour away free - you're attracting folk who may want to pay for more expensive services later. What Erica is doing is starting at $7 and increasing the price each time she sells a certain number. I found the interview a heap more helpful than many expensive ebooks I've bought. The USP thing intrigued me too. I'd thought it absolutely essential. Ben doesn't advise against having one but he does say that sometimes it can be dangerous to do so and there's better ways to sell your product.
