Are We Stupid? Silva Life System Review Part 1
March 8, 2009
Are we stupid? We’ve known for years that we only use a fraction of the full potential of our brains. And, if we’re not doing anything about it, we’re probably not that smart.
But the Silva Life System claims to offer a solution. The system is available in a 10 day home study course and comes with exceptionally bold claims.
The course will enable you to use more of the power of your mind to do many things. It will help you achieve your full potential, give up bad habits, heal illness in yourself and others, cure insomnia and lose weight, plus many other things.
I could use a lot of help with some of those things, so I thought it would be interesting to do a daily review, to see if the Silva Life System lives up to it’s claims.
When people are selling stuff, they stick to publishing glowing reviews and testimonials from happy customers. So, I figured that by doing an ongoing review, you can see for yourself whether the Silva Life System sucks, or if it could work for you.
My First Impressions Of The Course
Sometimes, you buy a course and when it arrives, it’s just a book, or a manual. It sucks when that happens, as the creator has described the book as a course, to justify the high price tag.
I was pleased to discover that the Silva Life System is a proper course, with a good balance of listening and doing. Plus, it wasn’t expensive. I got the downloadable version for only $97, which is a real bargain, if it lives up to its claims.
The first day of the course contained some things I knew already. But many of them were things I forget to put into practise. And I found that the course made me think and do, which is a lot more useful than just knowing.
Here’s my review of Day One and Day 2.
Day One of the Silva Life System includes:
- The history Of The Silva Life System and how it has helped others.
- How the Silva Life System can help you improve your relationships, achieve your goals, give up bad habits, lose weight, heal yourself and others.
- How to manage stress effectively.
- How your beliefs affect what happens in your life and how to change negative beliefs.
- How your mind works on different levels.
- How to change your negative thoughts into positive ones.
- A short relaxing meditation.

Silva Life System Day One – My Impressions
I’ve been putting off certain tasks for a long time. The benefits of doing them are great. But I just couldn’t figure our why I kept putting them off. And the trouble is, when you’re deliberately avoiding things, often you don’t want to explore the reason why.
Day One of the course helped me to pinpoint why I’ve avoided those tasks and gave me the information that I need to actually get them done. Now I just need to see if the rest of the course will help me do that.
Day 2 of the Silva Life System includes:
- Meditation and why it is necessary.
- How meditation enables to access infinite knowledge to solve our problems.
- How we can learn to access the part of us that enables us to make the right decisions.
- How to relax the body in meditation by concentrating on individual parts.
- How to achieve mental relaxation in meditation.
- A guided meditation – approximately 30 minutes in duration.

How Day 2 of the Silva Life System Helped Me
I’ve meditated before but the advice on how to make it work better was useful. Before the guided meditation, there was a long description on what it was going to be about. And I was kind of disappointed when I heard it. I’ve been using a free Silva Life System guided meditation for a while and this meditation sounded identical.
When it came to the meditation exercise, it was very similar. But unlike the free meditation, this one included a weird electronic background noise. It was kind of irritating at first but I did find that it helped me relax faster and after the meditation, I felt more alert and refreshed.
But the best results were to come. I’ve been having serious sleep problems lately. For many months, I’ve been on medication to ease pain from an old injury and to help me sleep. But the medication has been causing problems for me and also making me feel zombified. So, I came off it over a week ago.
Since then my sleep has suffered – I’ve been unable to fall asleep until around 4 or 5 am. Also the pain has started to come back. But at the end of Day 2, I fell asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow and the following morning, the pain had eased a lot.
This result was impressive, especially given that the session on insomnia doesn’t come until Day 3. I’m hoping that the results weren’t just a fluke and that the Silva Life System will enable me to live medication free.
Do you have areas in your life which you’d like to improve? Have you tried courses or books before? Which ones helped/didn’t help?

I’ve seen the advertisement for the Silva Life System on Mare’s site and often wondered about it, but never checked it out. What you’ve written so far sounds good, so I’ll be keen to follow your progress.

Hi Kelly – Thanks. I must admit, I’m impressed so far. I couldn’t believe how easily I fell asleep last night. I’m just about to do part 3 and I’m going to post the review of day 3 and 4 on Wednesday.
I do like your approach to this – testing their 10 day claim and reporting on it. That way you guarantee that you’ll follow-through and complete the course and get thate benefit. I’ll keep following as well.
I must admit that in the past I have purchased such courses without fully considering the time it would take to use them. No more. I truly think before hitting that buy button.
I have no experience with Silva so I’m interested in your results.

Cath,
Sounds like a promising start, and I hope that the program is able to assist you in dealing with your sleep related matters.
I am curious – I don’t mean to pry into your private matters, but you mentioned that on the first day, you discovered the reasons why you have been putting some tasks off even though you appreciated the benefits of doing those tasks. If you are comfortable in sharing this, I would be very interested to know a little more about what these reasons were.
Personally, I would have thought that procrastination would have been caused to a large extent by too much focus upon the short term pain or costs associated with the performance of the task in question and too little focus upon the (perhaps longer term) benefits of completion of the task. Personally, I am certain that that is one of the main reasons why I so often procrastinate in tasks such as cleaning my apartment.

Hi Cath,
Thanks so much for the link love.
I have been very curious about the Silva System and am very happy to see you are and will continue to post about it. I am very familiar with the no sleep/pain cycle and getting a good night’s sleep is very important for getting rid of pain. I am so happy to hear this helped you. Meditation and particularly GOOD guided meditations help me fall to sleep and sleep soundly almost every night.
Thanks again. : -) Virginia did answer your question on my site…. if you wanted to look. I’ll be back to follow your progress and this is stumbled and reviewed.
Lots of love,
Jenny

Hi Tom – I never thought about it like that but I guess it’s true.
I don’t do reviews on here often but I’ve reviewed hotels and stuff on trip advisor. And trouble is, if my overall opinion was generally good, I tend to forget the bad stuff and my reviews are never balanced.
So I figured that if I review as I go, it will be easier to share the pros and cons.
Obviously – doing it this way, I guess I’ll be more determined to achieve great results. I don’t want to tell the world I totally failed at it.
Hi Andrew – Thanks for asking. I had intended to include that info in the review but I thought it might make it too long.
Basically, what they’re saying is that we sometimes associate problems we have now, with old problems. So our new situation is affected by the same fear as we had in the old one.
Many years ago, I suffered a brutal physical attack, in which I thought I was going to die. And I froze.
The problem I have now, is that the tasks I have put off, have been made difficult by some people who have tried to deliberately harm me – not physically but still harm me.
So, what I’m doing is associating that harm, with the old harm that happened when I was attacked. And I’m freezing up at the thought of carrying on with the things I’m putting off. I can’t put the full details of those here – although I will eventually, if I try to resolve them and I can’t.
It’s not like I’m thinking I’m going to die, every time I think about doing them. But I am freezing up the same.
I hope this makes some sense and helps you work on your procrastinations. I’ll try to write about it in more detail in the near future.
Hi Jenny – You are welcome. Did you know – Dr Wayne Dyer has also used the Silva System and recommends it highly?
I’ve just done day 3, so my next post in the series will be on Wednesday.
Also, I will check out Virginia’s reply. I’ve been totally slated for reviewing something containing the word “rich” before, which is why I asked the question.
And thank you for stumbling my post. It really is appreciated, since I’m no longer allowed to vote stuff on StumbleUpon.
Hi,
So many bloggers are writing about this Silva Learning System that I was wondering what it’s like.
My only “issue” to purchasing this product — well — I have lost track of the sense of “problems”, like I recently wrote on my blog. Does this work for people with no problems?

Cath,
I have watched this program work in high school students when it was a workshop that came to town and they went once a week for the semester.
The kiddos that finished the whole semester did better in their school work and were not as anxious about college and that work load.
I saw lots of benefits that lasted over time and with reminders.
What an exciting thing to share.
Thank you…I’ll be watching how it works for you.
Patricia’s last blog post..“My Neighborhood Looks Like a Snow Globe!”
Hi Akemi – I’m not sure if it would help people without problems. I will probably be able to tell you when I’ve finished the course though.
In the course description, it says it can help to improve creativity, achieve goals, remember dreams and reach alpha state faster so you can access consciousness more quickly.
I guess it would depend if you felt like you needed help doing any of those things.
Hi Patricia – Thanks. That sounds encouraging. I was wondering how well it might work for kids. My older one has agreed to try it, if it works out well for me. But the younger one says she doesn’t need to use it as she’s happy with her life and doesn’t want to improve it.
Thanks for this review. I’m pleased to see guided meditation products being offered more often that focus on sensing how you’re feeling in your body, as opposed to just repeating sentences to yourself about how you are becoming more wealthy or loving. I find that, when I bring my attention to how I’m feeling in some part of my body, that does so much to restore my focus.
Hi Cath: I’m glad to hear Silva is working out for you, I absolutely love it. That weird sound in the background is the alpha sound and it makes your brain vibrate at the alpha level. I would turn on a tape I had of the alpha sound when I was studying for law exams and it would really help me to concentrate and be able to easily recall the information when I was taking the test.

I beleive meditation is a subtley powerful and useful to us all. It is a way of observing our minds. This often creates a calmer more flexible mind, whicis great for all aspects of our daily lifes.
Hi Chris – I’ve done some of those before and some of them seem more like hypnosis than guided meditation. This course seems far more effective so far.
Hi Marelisa – I’m having amazing results so far. Thank you for telling me about it. I did day 3 today and I seem to be making progress faster than I thought possible.
I wondered what that sound was. I didn’t think it would be helpful but it was. It is brilliant that it helped you concentrate and recall the information for your exam.
Hi Lee – It really does seem to help a lot doesn’t it.
I’ve read a lot of positive reviews about the Silva Life System, and I’m sure I have it bookmarked somewhere. It’s sounding better and better.

I attended both the Basic and Advanced workshops in a physical location and found that techniques useful! It helped me strengthen my visualization skills. I also found much congruency with the teachings to what others eg. Napolean Hill espoused.
I was subsequently told that the program was available online and that it helped to augment what was taught. I’d be interested to know your thoughts about Silva Life and will be looking forward to your coming posts.

Hi Cath – I think it’s great that you have identified an association with the past that is keeping you from moving forward, and that you’ve also identified the specific response mechanism (freezing) you’re using out of that association when you feel vulnerable. Breaking through the self-imposed barrier, even when you know it’s because your subconscious wants to protect you from threat, is going to feel very powerful.
I was fascinated by this review, and I’m looking forward to reading your entry tomorrow on your additional progress. It’s hard to believe results arrive so quickly. I didn’t know anything about the Silva system prior to reading this post, but now you have sparked an interest and I want to know more. Thanks!

Hi Melissa – Like you, I read a lot of reviews before using it. Mare’s squidoo lens is really helpful. And I don’t know if you read about the guy who had been given 6 months to live and managed to shrink the cancerous tumour himself until it was gone. That was an amazing story.
Hi Robin – Thank you. It does seem that more and more people are doing this kind of thing doesn’t it. I also liked your review of the weekend course you did.
Hi Evelyn – I guessed that you’d probably done this course. I did see an ad that offered the online course free with the physical one. I guess it would act as a refresher course.
Like you, I’m seeing similarities to what Hill taught. The 5 Step Problem Solving is very similar to the methods he recommended to achieve goals.
Hi Barbara – It really is interesting. I’m about to do day 4 shortly. And while it hasn’t all been plain sailing, it really is helping me to do a lot of things I never thought I’d be able to do all at once.
Hi Wilhb – You should check it out. Maybe it could even help with your claustrophobia.
Hi Betsy – you know I hadn’t even thought about it that way. But I guess it really is our subconscience trying to protect us from a perceived threat. I guess now I just need to trick my subconscience into believing there is no danger.
You will like day 3. Some things went not so well but other good things happened.
Hi John – You are welcome. You saved my blog because I had no idea how to get in when Bluehost disabled my account.
That reminds me – I did a testimonial & put it in drafts when electric went off – I’ll email it to you.
Kids are v good at increasing stress levelsaren’t they? And when they’re as young as your two, it’s hard to get time to meditate.
Hi Vered – Sorry – you’d gone into moderation, I don’t know why.
I had guessed you had never meditated and I know you are unlikely to take a course like this one. But I know that even you will be impressed with what happened on day 3.
This is perfect timing for me! I downloaded the mp3 30-minute meditation from Evelyn’s site and have been using it for about a week and a half. Ive been wondering what I’d get if I bought the whole system. Years ago, I bought a couple of Jose Silva’s books, but could never get myself to do the exercises consistently.
The nice thing about the mp3 is that it guides me through it — I don’t have to make myself do it. The mp3 that I downloaded did have the alpha sound, like a tiny drum in the left ear. It has been helping me relax and sleep (I have severe sleep and pain problems too), but I was hoping they had something stronger.
The 7-day email course that came with the mp3 sign-up was mostly things I knew (plus hype), but there was good stuff in there for someone new to these concepts. I’m eager to read your next installment(s)!

Correction – The 7-day course has some very good information that I’m finding usefuf for my own goals. It was just the beginning that was stuff I knew.
Dot’s last blog post..Under the Weather
Hi Dot – It’s weird that your free download had the alpha sound and mine didn’t. I’m glad you mentioned that you got it from Evelyn’s site.
I thought I first saw it on Mare’s site but it may have been on Evelyn’s, as I remember browsing products on both their blogs ages ago but I couldn’t decide which I liked best.
Now, I didn’t try the email course, as I was so impressed with the free download that I knew I had to take the 10 day course. Then I was ill so I couldn’t use it straight away – which was disappointing.
Don’t forget to check out tomorrow’s post. I’m making amazing progress – far better than I’d ever anticipated in such a short time.
This sounds a lot like a self-help book, or a self-improvement claim. The problem with most people and most “self-help” products is people refuse to try them and therefore, in their mind, do not work, and self-help products are usually always things people already do or know, and therefore no one wants to try them. The cycle goes round and round. While reading your blog, i kept thinking to myself that the product you used sounds a lot like, and has many similarities to, “The Secret” which became oh so popular thanks to oprah but told us nothing we already didnt know. sounds like typical self-help.
Cath,
I apologize if my question was a little too personal.
I am very sorry to hear about your physical attack.
Andrew’s last blog post..Ryanair versus Jason Roe: How not to handle a blogging spat
Hi – I totally agree that a lot of self help products don’t work because people refuse to try them. Plenty of people buy them but many are either too lazy to put them into practise. Others spend too much time reading and not doing.
I’m not a huge fan of the Secret. To me it’s a dumbed down version of far superior work, repackaged for the mass market. And it’s left a whole heap of people believing they just need to think about something and it will come. So, no I don’t find this product the same as The Secret.
I don’t think this is something that would appeal to the mass market because it requires quite a bit of work and also, it really helps if you enjoy meditating. I’m guessing a small percentage of folk who buy it will actually complete the whole course and also apply the principles to their lives afterwards.

Hi Andrew – You have nothing to be sorry for. It happened a long time ago – over 15 years and I don’t mind talking about it at all. I spent years not being able to talk about it but time makes it much easier.
I’ve mentioned it on here before and I will definitely be writing about it again in the future.
Anything which helps others in some way is not too personal to talk about. So feel free to ask away

Oh boy, the Silva Method was something I read about 20 years ago, and something I finally started doing 2 years ago. Doing it is so much more than reading about it, believe me. It has opened up my mind in ways I never imagined, and has brought peace, joy, excitement, healing, and strength to my life. In these times of economic turmoil, this simple tool unlocks your mind and opens doors that you can’t even imagine. The price is peanuts for the education you get, which is better than any advanced college degree.
Great article. I look forward to reading the rest of your review.

Well I was planning on testing the water with the Free downloadable book and audio. However, once you select “free”, you will be caught in a perpetual loop where you are taken back to a “one time offer you will never see this offer again” webpage. Just by virtue of this tasteless tactic, I will be passing on Silva. So sad too because I am serious but just not willing to fork out 200. for something I don’t like. Too many internet scams out there have burned me.
Hi Diana – I’m glad you had great success with the program. I’ve spoken to a few people who have also done the weekend seminars and I would really like to try one out.
Hi Vickie, I’m sorry you’ve had problems getting the free downloadable book. I started off with the free meditation and it did take me a while to work out how to download it.
If you add a comment here, with your email address included, I can email you the free meditation. Just fill in your email address in the comment form – it won’t show up on your message. Even the free download is really worthwhile.
