What Did You Learn?

June 22, 2009

Did you learn anything new over the last few days? One thing I really love about blogging is the unlimited learning potential. Often, I’ll read a post that inspires me to learn more about a particular subject. Or a discussion in the comments suggestion will point me in the direction of some great resources. And I spent a huge part of the weekend learning new stuff.

Here’s a few resources I’ve found useful recently and if you have some resources of your own – please share them in the comments section.

What Is Hypnosis? I’ve tried quite a few hypnosis CD’s and downloads in the past. Some have been ok and others have been excellent. But I’ve never really understood a lot about how hypnosis actually works. So I found Tim Brownson’s explanation of what hypnosis is and what it does and doesn’t do, really useful.

Near Death Experiences: In a discussion on life after death, Kelly Rigby of She Power, mentioned that she knew someone who had a near death experience and they felt as though they were burning in hell.

Although I’ve heard about near death experiences before, none of them had mentioned going to hell. But what Kelly said prompted me to do a bit more digging and I came across the fascinating story of Howard Storm, who was saved from hell, came back to earth and trained to be a minister of the United Church of Christ.

What’s a Frame?: J.D. Meier explains how to use frames to solve problems. And he shares some excellent frames he created, including The Change Frame, and The Life Frame.

Writing An Ebook: Have you ever thought about writing and publishing an E-book? Marelisa Febrega has put together an excellent free guide on how to get it done. You can download it here: Step By Step Tutorial: Write, Publish & Market Your Own E-Book.

Past Life Regression: I’m a bit skeptical when it comes to the idea of past life regression and reincarnation. So, Akemi Gaines told me to check out the amazing video about a 3 year old child who could remember a past life in detail. And I was so intrigued that I also watched these past life regression videos.

What new things have you learned lately? Please share in the comments section and provide links to resources if possible.

Hi Cath: I have written down on my personal creed that I have to learn something new every day, so thank you for this. I think I’m going to watch the past life regression videos. And thank you for the mention. :-)

I recently learned of a Twitter user who tweets pretty much nothing about what they have learned for the day. Pretty cool.

Hi Cath – Well, I learned a few things in the last 24 hours:

There were over 500,000 U.S. casualties in the VietNam war. My father-in-law thought there were 5,000. I learned he doesn’t like to be challenged on his facts, either. :)

I learned that there are a gazillion ways to cook bear meat. Who knew? The owners of the franchise I do work for were up at their cabin west of Edmonton, and Pat shot a bear. I’m still waiting for the story, because I know he’s not a hunter. It may have been in the yard! Anyway, I get a text from his wife off her Blackberry: How do you cook bear meat? Her Ukrainian mother does most of the cooking up there for the family, and I’ll be there are no Ukrainian bear recipes! So I found some on the Internets!

I learned that it is possible to become addicted to the FarmTown game on Facebook, and that may be possible for us to complete our perennial landscape challenge by using free plants from Craigslist. Awesome!

I am off to check out the Howard Storm link – how fascinating!

Glad you liked the video. It’s amazing how some people retain special knowledge, isn’t it?
I like your attitude of ongoing learning. I think it makes life more fun and interesting.

I have learned the Wordpress hates me and will now for some bizarre reason only show one incoming link and I keep missing stuff. But then I learned to love Google Alerts because it kicks Wordpresses ass by letting me know if I have missed any links.

Then I learned that all is good in the world and I should stop playing favorites with huge organizations because life is too short.

I think that’s plenty to be getting on with for now.

    Cath,

After reading your post and the comments, I have learned that I still have a hell of a lot to learn!

I will be checking out the sites you mentioned. I really am interested in J.D.’s frames and the past lives videos, but most of all you post makes me aware of the power of the Internet. Can you believe how much we can learn from the wonderful creation:~)

Hi Marelisa – You’re welcome. The videos are really interesting – particularly the ones about the boy from Scotland.

LOL John – He has some weird stuff on there – eg: Today I learned that Ernest Hemingway committed suicide with a shotgun purchased from Abercrombie & Fitch. Gonna have to follow the guy – can’t resist it.

LOL Betsy – there is a huge difference between 5,000 and 500,000. And I didn’t even know people ate bears. I wonder if they taste sort of like buffalo or something?

Hi Akemi – Thanks – it is a lot of fun. The video was awesome. I wanted to watch a couple more tonight but Jessica has disappeared the sound on my laptop.

Hi Vered – I know the feeling – it’s not good. And if you do it too often you can make yourself ill and wind up being way less productive.

LOL Tim – I am in the same boat. You can’t see who has linked you at all. Think I will try learning the Google Alerts stuff too.

Hi Sara – It’s awesome isn’t it? I like it a whole heap better than the library – it doesn’t even charge me late fees.

I learned that a reconstructed William Hartnell episode means it has full sound with still photos. Before that I thought the video had been reconstructed. I have a sort of lame goal of watching every Doctor Who episode since the show aired in 1963.

I learned that iPhone warehouses have armed guards patrolling outside.

I also learned that people like car analogies.

Hi Kim – That is a lot of Doctor Who. It’s scary that iPhone feel the need to have armed guards.

    Thanks for the link love!

I’m constantly amazed how many gems there are on the Web. I find I really depend on my network to send me the good stuff.

Hypnosis is cool. One of my favorite books is How To Hypnotize Yourself and Others. Long back, a circle of my friends practiced hypnosis after a hypnotist came to our school and wowed us.

Cath, I have been doing past-life and inter-life hypnotic regression sessions for about 2 years. This work is based on Brian Weiss, Michael Newton, Mary Lee Lebay and others. Whether this is a metaphor our minds make up or a real remembrance is up to the individual to decide. What is unquestioned for me is the value of the wisdom and insight gained by each person who pursues this work.

  14. cathlawson on June 24th, 2009 10:30 pm

Hi JD – That sounds like fun. I’ve been thinking about doing a hypnosis download for my readers, so I’ll check out that book.

Hi Peter, It sounds like you really believe in what you’re doing. And as you say, if it works, it;s great – regardless of what is making it work.

  15. wilhb81 on June 25th, 2009 7:27 am

Talking about the past life regression, Cath. I heard it from one of my student’s parent that she’d a nephew who is able to remember very clearly about his past life! He said he was a American soldier who fought and scarified in the Vietnam war. When he was heavily injured in his right arm and suffering with pain, when he’s passed away…

I didn’t know whether it’s true or not, but to me, anything is possible, especially the reincarnation!

    Hey Cath,

Yeah hypnosis can be very interesting, I have studied it and refined my skills for quite some time. If you are looking for some good hypnosis cds, I can recommend one which is excellent, which is the Sphinx of Imagination by Hypnotica. It’s probably the best one out there, and I’ve listened to a lot of them as well, so I’d recommend you check if out if you’re looking for an experience.

That one is not really so much of a “conditioning cd” as it is an experience with the mind. That’s what I’m into, as a hypnotist, is giving people powerful experiences, so I find it very cool :)

Now, what have I learned lately? I’ve learned about card magic and how to do card tricks. What I found is that if you walk around the street with a deck of cards in your hands, people will almost always say, “hey David Copperfield show me a card trick” … that’s when you say, “Ok, but you have to pay very close attention…” hehe.. Take care.
