6 Little Success Tips
July 8, 2009
Real success is usually achieved over time, through small steps we take. Get yourself on the right track, by following these 6 Little Success Tips.
1. Know Yourself – The more you learn about and understand yourself – the easier it will be to overcome your challenges and achieve your goals. Life coach, Davina Haisell has mastered this and you can learn from her. Read “On The Edge Of Being” and be inspired.
2. Be Loud - If you don’t let people know you exist, chances are they’ll never find you. Jon Morrow stresses the importance of blowing your own trumpet in “The Susan Boyle Guide To Being Loud & Proud.”
3. Screw Up – Give yourself permission to make plenty of mistakes – it’s the only way you’ll learn. Early in his career, Brad Shorr made a costly marketing mistake but it taught him a valuable lesson he never forgot.
4. Find Your Own Definition Of Success – Trying to achieve someone else’s definition of success could be meaningless and potentially dangerous to you, if it isn’t what you want. I used to believe success was all about financial achievement, no matter how much other areas of my life suffered – and they did. So, I had to redefine what success was about and change my life completely. If you want to be happy – think carefully about what success means to you.
5. Love Yourself – In “Love The Man In The Mirror” Evelyn Lim explains that you can’t have rewarding relationships with others, if you don’t have a good relationship with yourself.
6. Examine Your Attitude – In “How To Become More Successful” Steve Pavlina explains how to examine your attitude to successful folk around you and make the necessary changes, in order to become more successful yourself.

Got something to say?

Great points, Cath. Number one is a big one for me. I wrote an article a while back called Tips for Maximizing Your Potential. The first thing I feel people should do to become more successful in their lives is take an in depth look at themselves.
Why do you believe what you believe? Was it your parent’s teachings, a teacher, or…?
You need to discover who you really are and only then will you know your feet are planted firmly on the ground.

Hi Cath – Success to me has most recently come to connote a general sense of well-being, or the absence of stress. A feeling of being comfortable with myself and where I am in life. With regard to the future, it’s a feeling of manageable dissatisfaction – leading to goals and objectives to maintain a progression. I’m feeling pretty successful based on these parameters.

“Give yourself permission to make plenty of mistakes – it’s the only way you’ll learn. ” I love this tip. Any perfectionist (like myself) should read this.

# 4 is so key. One person’s treasure is another’s trash.
The funny thing about defining your success is not everybody knows what their own rules are. A quick way to find them is to ask, “in order to be a successful whatever, i would need to ….” and then fill in the blank (it’s like a game of Mad Libs.)
I like Covey’s simple definition of success … it’s when the response meets the challenge.
Success always reminds me of that Calvin and Hobbs where Calvin was all upset because he got a D on his paper, but then he lowered his expectations and was happy again. it’s all about how you make your own meaning.

Hi John – That is so true – a lot of what we think are our beliefs, aren’t actually our beliefs at all. But often we don’t realise that until we really start thinking about it.
Hi Betsy – Those sound like good goals to have – especially no stress. That’s something I would like to aim for too.
Hi Vered – you’d get so much more done I guess. I put off completing so many things, when in reality – they were good enough at the point I reached already.
Hi JD – I like the idea of doing the Mad Libs thing to come up with the answers you’re looking for.
The Calvin and Hobbs thing sounds so familiar. It’s crazy that we allow ourselves to be unhappy so much, just because we don’t give ourselves permission to be happy.
Cath, Thanks for the mention, and for these very wise pieces of advice. In marketing we always preach looking outward, putting yourself in your customer’s shoes, etc. But you’re right: it all starts with you. If you don’t love yourself and know yourself, you’re going to have a hard time loving and knowing others or finding fulfillment in any meaningful way. Extremely important reminders!

Hi Brad – You’re welcome. I am still laughing about your outrageous Yellow Pages bill, although I shouldn’t be. They totally ripped me off with an online sponsored ad a while back.
And don’t forget the most important – always believe not only IN yourself, but also in your future dreams.
Never let anyone tell you, it cannot be done. Find that out for yourself…or go prove ‘em wrong.

Hi Cath,
Love the list – all so true – although not always so easy to do (like embracing screw-ups). I do have a quote on success that I really hold as something I aim for:
“To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children … to leave the world a better place … to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
Honestly, if I can reach the end of my life, believing deeply that I’ve done this, then I’ll be happy… That said, on a more daily basis, sucess can sometimes feel much different…

Hi Cath. Permission to make mistakes is something I have a challenge with. I’m a recovering perfectionist; for a good part of my career, as you know, I’ve been a proofreader. Making mistakes was something that was frowned upon. I spent most of my days pointing out mistakes. It’s a tough habit to break. I’ve come a long way though. Thanks for the mention Cath. I like your introduction: Success is achieved over time. So true!

I absolutely ADORE this post!!! My most favorite…. SCREW UP!!!
Whomever started spreading the “perfection = success” lie should be tarred and feathered!!!
The TRUE recipe for success is falling down 9 times and getting up 10.
Most of us tend to forget that the journey of a thousand miles is comprised of many, many small steps.
I’d rather focus on how much money Donald Trump has today – rather than be reminded that not so long ago, he was more than broke – he was 900 million in debt at one point!!!
I’m not a fan (or customer) of the Donald’s by any stretch – but I do admire his ability to follow the six steps you’ve laid out here.
Thanks Cath for the reminder of what we need to be doing to keep moving forward!

Great Post Cath and it took me a long time to get through all your references.
I spent so much time in my life trying to live to my mother’s expectations of me – they were impossible – but they felt like the only way to get the love…I now know that will not work and that she gave love, only it was the only way she knew how Not by the way I thought it could be…having my own family made a huge difference and I could really appreciate myself.
A whole afternoon of reading and learning – thank you Cath Lawson for this awesome post…
@Lance – I do not know why and have my IT person on it, but I can not get on your blog this week….just get an error page…my tweet button is turning my posts into code/we got that fixed. but I thought maybe no one would mind if I let you know I was trying to get there and will be back soon
Thank you

Point no 4, Find Your Own Definition Of Success, i think the most important, because when we define that, we have the goal to achieve.
Agree 100% with the “Know Yourself” bit.
I spent a fair amount of time trying to succeed at something that I was good at, but didn’t enjoy. The money was good, but it wasn’t worth it.
Great article…

Now, this is a royal great boot to the motivational behind kind of post. Cool, Cath, Thanks.
I think I’m experimenting with the Be Loud phase right now, and about to probably make lots of mistakes. But “if you’re not making at least 10 mistakes before lunch you’re not trying hard enough,” right?

Hi Barbara – That is really important. Allowing the voices of negative folk to become louder than your own is fatal.
Hi Lance – I love that quote – especially this part: “to leave the world a better place”.
Hi Davina – thank you and you’re welcome. I can imagine perfectionism to be a real struggle for a proofreader, as it’s your job to make sure that copy is perfect.
Hi Kathy – Thank you. Donald Trump is a great example. It must be really difficult to actually see a way out when you’re that far in debt and be able to pick yourself up again. He’s an inspiration to us all.
Hi Patricia – You’re welcome. You must be busy packing for your UK trip right now. Hope you have a great time.
Trying to live up to other people’s expectations is never good. I’ve been thinking about what you said here (I read the comments a while before I respond – usually) and I’m going to be writing a bit more about that.
Hi Bikin – that’s a good point. Knowing what we want, enables us to achieve our goal.
Hi Bill – no matter how much money we’re making, it’s difficult to be satisfied if we don’t enjoy it. I’m glad you were able to recognise that, so you could move onto something else.
LOL Jannie – ten mistakes sounds good. I think you’re doing a good job of being loud and it does help to get you noticed.
Hi Valerie – Never giving up is so important. I bet a lot of folk give up, right before the breakthrough they were hoping to achieve.
Hi Cath: My success tip is perseverance. No matter how many times you fall, get back up. No matter how many doors are slammed in your face, keep knocking.

Honestly, Cath. I felt sorry for Susan Boyle, as she was totally devastated, soon after she found she was lost in the Britain’s Got Talent’s Finale…
However, I did learned a lesson from Boyle, “We should give 120% to everything we do in our life!”

Hi Mare – That is so true – perseverance beats talent every time.
Hi Wilson – It was bad what happened to her wasn’t it? I think she found it difficult to deal with all the pressure.
