Is God Bigger Than A Bus?

October 7, 2009

My son Josh was an atheist, before he was knocked over by a coach. I’ve always believed that it’s best to let him make his own mind up. And after all, atheist is better than satanist, or whatever it is that Marilyn Manson is trying to influence teenagers to be nowadays.

But he does go to church once a month, so he’s allowed to go to BB club. So, he dragged himself out of bed early for the church service, the day before the bus hit him.

And when the nurse asked him what religion he was yesterday – he admitted he was confused. He just can’t believe a bus hit him and he survived – not just a little bus but a bloody big coach. So someone must have been looking out for him.

Yes, he is in a lot of pain and it’s early days but Joshua is just grateful he is alive and so are we. The base of his skull is fractured, the front of his brain is bruised, he has damage to his lung, two broken ribs and lots of gravel rash, cuts and bruises. But he is alive and that is all that matters.

I told him that lots of people have been sending good wishes and praying for him and he is so grateful, because he knows that all that praying must have worked. How else could he have survived a collision with a bloody big bus?

And there is one more thing he is certain about – he will never ride a bicycle without a helmet again. It was only a quick journey, to return something he’d borrowed from a friend. But even on a short journey, accidents can happen.

So, if you have kids, I hope you share Josh’s story. He was very lucky but the damage to his skull and brain could have been avoided, if he’d been wearing a helmet. And I know wearing a helmet might not seem cool – but neither is being in hospital, or worse.

I’m off to the hospital again now but I’d like to say a really big thank you to everyone who helped at the scene of the accident and those who have sent prayers and good wishes – it really is appreciated.

Cath, I’m relieved to hear your son is going to recover. An experience like that can’t help him and those close to him reevaluate anything and everything we take for granted. And yes, God is bigger than a bus. :) Take care, get well, and be well.

Wow, what a trooper! I was so happy to read this update. A brush like this is a game-changer. Josh seems like an intuitive, contemplative young man, and it will be interesting to hear not only how he is recuperating, but what he’s taken away from the matter to move ahead with his life. Thanks, Cath – good thoughts rolling toward you and your family.

Sending healing thoughts to Josh and the whole family. My daughter and I did notice that very few bike riders had helmets on during out UK trip and those that did were the Italian’s we visited with in Scotland.

My husband’s work partner was attacked by a dog last year…and came off his bike at about 45 miles per hour….his helmet shattered but not his head…..he had a wee concussion and huge other broken bones and road rash…..They are helmet fanatics now….

sometimes it does not even take a bus…

Hi Cath – I know I shouldn’t laugh at a time like this, but the way you express yourself makes me laugh. And I can laugh – with relief – because I am so glad he is okay. It was very serious! I’m glad Josh finds comfort from knowing that we are all thinking of him.

Oh my God, I did not know until just now.

Kelly fractured her elbow the other day and that was kind of disconcerting but I cannot imagine your life these days.

Josh must have lot of love and light yet to bring into the world.

Will be thinking of and checking in on you.

Thanks everyone for your kind words and thoughts. Josh has been very lucky and he is making a good recovery.

Patricia – it sounds like the helmet saved your husband’s friend. It is true what you say about the UK – you tend to see more people without helmets than with. The prices have come down a lot now, so hopefully we’ll see a lot more people wearing them in the future.

Jannie – With not being about, I didn’t know about Kelly’s elbow either. I bet that hurt a lot – it’s bad enough when you just bump your elbow. I hope she makes a speedy recovery.

Oh Cath – I’m so glad he’s ok! This is what I get for not keeping up – I had no idea this had happened.

They make really cool helmets now – I hate wearing them too and forced myself to buy a badass one yesterday.

I’m so glad that he is going to be fine.

    Thanks Lim.

Thanks Kim – I saw some really cool helmets in a skateboarding shop and the guy said they’re great to use on bikes also, so I might get him one of those.
