Business Site of the Week Award: Guy Kawasaki

May 21, 2007

Hi, Thanks for visiting. Here's a free gift. It's an ebook to help you start your own viral marketing campaign and drive tons of traffic to your website or blog.

My business site of the week award goes to Guy Kawasaki’s blog.  Guy started out with Apple computers, so as you can imagine, he’s pretty switched on about what it takes to start and succeed in business.  In one of his best posts:  The Art of Bootstrapping, Guy explains why you should be focusing on cashflow as opposed to profits.

Of course, Guy doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be trying to make a profit.  What he is saying is that a start up business should go after work that will bring in cash now, as opposed to huge accounts which may not bring in a penny for months.  His advice is well worth listening to - a business without cash coming will survive about as long as a school with no teachers.

Are you Too Scared To Live?

May 20, 2007

Would you like to start a business, but you’re too afraid of failure?  Maybe you’re scared of the financial insecurity involved in giving up your job, or re-mortaging the house.  You would love to run a business but, you can’t afford to take the risk.  Maybe, the truth of the matter is, you’re too scared to live.

If you were truly happy with what you have now, you wouldn’t even be contemplating starting a business anway.  If you’re unhappy with your life to begin with, what are you really risking?

Your time on this earth is actually extremely short, and the only thing you can know with any degree of certainty is that one day you are going to die.  So why not make the most of the time you have left?

Dr Elizabeth Kubler Ross, who studied the dying said that it was not those things they had done, which those on their deathbeds regretted, it was the things that they hadn’t done.  Don’t die wishing you’d done the things you wanted.  Don’t be afraid to live.  Don’t be scared to take risks.

Quotes by business women: Anita Roddick

May 16, 2007

Quotes by famous business women and men can be useful in motivating and inspiring you.  Here’s one of my favourite quotes by Anita Roddick, entrepreneur and The Body Shop founder:Â

“If you do things well, do them better. Be daring, be first, be different, be just.”

The Secret Isn’t Much of A Secret Anymore

May 15, 2007

Unless you’ve been asleep for a while, you’ll probably be aware of The Secret, by Rhonda Byrne.  The Secret, which is based on the Law of Attraction was released on the internet last year as a pay per watch, or you could buy the DVD.  Since then it has sold 5.5 million copies in hardback, and has remained at the top of the New York times best seller list for 17 weeks.

It seems a lot of people now know about The Secret, but it doesn’t end there.  Those who “starred” in The Secret DVD are also cashing in on The Secret.  Esther and Jerry Hicks are in the New York Times paperback best sellers list, and their book is called - wait for it - The Law of Attraction.  As if the Secret wasn’t being spread enough, other presenters of the DVD - Jack Canfield and Bob Proctor have brought out the Secret affiliate program - SGR.  For only 2000 dollars, you can have a briefcase stuffed with CD’s and some other stuff, and in return you gain the privelege of profiting when you sell these £2000 dollar kits to others.  Personally, I think I’ll give it a miss.

The Secret wasn’t really a secret to begin with.  It’s actually based on stuff in the books which have been written many years ago - The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace Wattles, and my favourite, Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill.  So how does the new and revamped secret compare?  Well, I’ve watched the DVD, and I liked the way it was put together, but it didn’t really go into as much detail as Think and Grow Rich.

So will The Secret help improve the lives of the millions who I have bought it?  It would be nice if it did help some of them, but I don’t think it would take you to long to count the people it will make rich.  Unfortunately, many of those who buy it will be looking for a quick way to make millions over night, and because the DVD gives the impression that all you need to do is think about what you want, and you will get it, I think there’s going to be a lot of disappointed people out there.
