How to Shoot Your Customers Part 3 - The Scammer

August 2, 2007

Hi, Thanks for visiting. Here's a free gift. It's an ebook to help you start your own viral marketing campaign and drive tons of traffic to your website or blog.

The scammer was the most hilarious case ever of customers I’ve ever had to shoot. I met the scammer when I still had my Rainbow fire and flood restoration business. She didn’t look like the usual type of scammer - in fact, she was well into her eighties.

Her home had been flooded but the problem was she was only insured for buildings, not contents. The scammer had a large rug, and my staff knew it could be salvaged if it was cleaned immediately. The rug was worth no more than £200, but the scammer was a pensioner, so they offered to take it away and clean it for free. The scammer was most grateful for this help - or so she said.

A couple of days later, I received a letter which began - Dear Rainbow Robbers. The scammer was accusing us of stealing her rug - what was more, she claimed that it was worth £4000. She didn’t want the rug back - just a cheque in the post by return.

We’d already returned the freshly cleaned rug, so I ignored her request, but a couple of days later, the Scammer’s town counciller turned up at my office demanding to know what I’d done to the said rug. Surely it was a mistake? When did he speak to the Scammer? He said he’d spoken to her that morning, and she’d denied getting the rug back at all, and she wanted her £4000 right away.

I politely explained the situation to the Town Counciller and showed him the letter the scammer had sent. I shot this scammer with a pea shooter. She never did pay her £25 excess - at least not in this life, but about a year later, we received a cheque from the executors of her will.

What we learned from the Scammer: If you do free stuff for dishonest people, they will try to take advantage in a big way. Also, scammers don’t become more honest with age, because they have less to lose.
