Does Everybody Hate You?
September 8, 2007
Hi, Thanks for visiting. You might want to click here to sign up to my RSS feed, so you don't miss anything important.
Are you interested in nothing else but making money? Then you could wind up being one of the most hated people on the planet.
You can’t visit a business blog these days without commentors moaning that the blogger has veered off the topic of making money. This happened on John Chow’s blog recently and a hostile slanging match broke out between two commentors.
And someone asked the following question on Shoemoney’s blog:
What’s the 5 most important things to know/do/act/think to create a highly successful online business? (Highly successful could be defined here in terms of becoming a millionnaire and more).
Now Shoemoney is one of my favourite blogs, because he’s honest, and he calls a spade a spade. And this is how he responded:
“If money is your only measurement of success then I think the 5 things would be: Lie, Cheat, Steal, Manipulate, Lie again. You wont have any friends and probably everyone will hate you but you will most likely be a millionaire.”
Now there is nothing wrong with wanting to make money, but Shoemoney hit the nail directly on the head. If you want to be successful in business, don’t allow making money to be your focus. Think in terms of providing value, creating solutions to people’s problems and helping to make the world a better place.
Are you getting the picture, or are you still obsessed with nothing more than making money? If you are that’s up to you. Just don’t expect the successful bloggers you criticize, to be the type of person you wish to become.

Got something to say?

I actually remember reading that on shoemoney recently. It was by far my favorite of his answers. I think I read it about three times.
I’m glad it resonates for you you as much as it does for me.
nicely said. there is a fine line there there between obsession and focus. i actually do prefer shoemoney over johnchow to the fact that shoemoney seems a lot more down to earth. johnchow as good as he is in making money comes across as a little on the arrogant side (and above everyone else) but i guess that makes him as good as he is.
I agree with you. The value for customers is what we should focus on.
I think these days, the world is particularly obsessed with “quick” money. I read on the news that Alan Greenspan said today’s market is a bit like just before the bubble crash of dot com boom in 1999 - 2000, because the fear is controlling the market? It seems everyone is so feared as if they can not survive unless they do not make a quick money now.
The Foo. I too prefer Shoemoney’s approach to John Chow’s. They are both very different. Shoemoney is really don’t to earth and John seems more theatrical.
The funny thing is, I don’t think John is so much obsessed with the amount of money he is making. It’s more that he prefers bragging about how he’s increased his sales so much because of his marketing efforts.
Asako - it is a bit worrying that Alan Greenspan is saying that. But, I think it’s important never to get dragged in with the fear and greed crowd. And I’ve personally always found it safest to do the opposite of what everyone else is doing.
Value of customers? Now hold on a second over there, John Chow doesn’t offer any kind of service in his blog.
Going off topic on a personal blog is nothing wrong actually. For those that insist on someone to write a make money tips i would advice to hire a tutor, other ways be quiet and read what the person has to write or simply don’t read. But threatening doubt will help you reach your goal.
Can you go and threat to Google AdSense that you won’t use adsense if they don’t publish the high paying AdWords advertisers on your published ads?
You’ve hit the nail on the head re: blogs such as John’s though. People don’t have to read the posts they don’t want to read. And they certainly shouldn’t be trying to force him to write what they want to hear.
