Thanks For Reading With Your Mouth Shut

October 11, 2008

I’ve thanked members of the commenting community who visit this blog a few times. And while I’m extremely grateful for their support, I realise that thousands of you visit this blog each week and read while keeping your mouth firmly shut.

Thank you - I really appreciate having you as readers. The first few months of writing on this blog were incredibly lonely. And I announced the other day that this blog has 150,000 web page views a month. But I would not have been lucky to reach so many readers, if people like you hadn’t kept showing up.

I often link out to other sites - especially to members of my commenting community. But today, I want to share some articles that have inspired me this week, by folk who don’t drop by here regularly to join in the discussion.

First off is Erica Douglass who started her own webhosting company when she was 20 and sold it 6 years later for $1.1 million. She explains how she did it here: How To Make A Million Dollars. And here: How I Turned My Mediocre Website Into A Million Dollar Business.

Jeremy Schoemaker is one of the most inspirational bloggers I have ever read. In fact, I first started reading his blog and saw this post, I thought he was “too real” to be real: I Used To Be Fat Until I Had A Duodenal Switch. And I was having a pretty shit day, when this brilliant post by Jeremy cheered me up. He explains how, when you hit rock bottom, there’s often something even better around the corner: Have You Ever Lost It All?

The Bag Lady has written an interesting article, on why she believes the Silicon Valley is a better place since the dot com bubble bursts. And she explains why this recession may also have a positive impact on the housing market and the banking industry in: Thank Goodness For The Dot Com Bubble.

And if you want to know the secrets to building a massive company, check out these excellent article by Manish Pandey, written for Dumb Little Man: Steve Jobs’ 10 Secrets To Building A Huge Empire.

This post was inspired by/pinched from Brad Shorr of Word Sell Inc. and Joanna Young of Confident Writing.

Oops, hit submit too soon. I also wanted to mention that my summer contract just ended so I am pursuing some more consulting gigs and building an e-learning site. Then, last week my lovely bride lost her job to downsizing, so we are preparing to go for a ride.

Our lease is up at the end of the month, and we have enough money to last us until April or May. So we are going to visit family in Illinois and Wisconsin, then off to Hilton Head, SC for December and January. After that, who knows?

Far from giving up, we are taking the fullest advantage!

Hi Cath. I always find it inspiring to hear stories such as Erica’s. It paves the way for more of us to believe it’s possible for ourselves if we are dedicated and persevere. Thanks.

Hi, I discovered your blog through PoeWar and am one of your silent readers. This post prompted me to drop a line to let you know that :)

Cath, comments are great but we’d all be lost without silent readers - and the ability to read quietly ourselves!

    Have a good Sunday

Hi Stephen - good for you turning something bad into a learning opportunity. Your e-learning site sounds interesting - you’ll have to let us know when it is live. Hilton Head is somewhere I’ve always wanted to go - you’ll have a fab time.

BTW - I loved the Seth Godin interview. Thanks for the heads up because I didn’t know he had a new book out and I love reading his work.

Hi Erica - you are welcome. You have some brilliant inspirational articles on your site. And you’ve done so much so young - I know my readers will love reading what you have to share.

Hi Vered - That’s fine too - I like talking to folk.

Hi Davina - it does indeed make it seem more possible for others. I like the way Erica tells it like it is, instead of sugar coating everything and pretending that success comes overnight.

Hi Samar - Thank you for speaking up. It’s nice to discover who some of my silent readers are. I love the Poewar site too - I often read it in silence unless I feel the need to speak up about something.

Hi Joanna - it’s all too easy to forget other folk are reading sometimes isn’t it? Thanks for letting me pinch your idea.

Hi Brad - thank you for allowing me to pinch it too. I’ve found some of the most interesting websites through finding out what other folk are reading.

It’s not possible for me to read with my mouth shut, thank you very much Miss Catherine. I believe that everyone learns something new every day, and I’m no exception to that belief. This is why I frequently interact with other people and ask questions or cite drivel such as this in the hopes other people learn.

Hi Ari - I also find it difficult to keep my mouth shut. Especially if I have a bee in my bonnet about a particular topic. But it’s true - the world is one massive learning opportunity.

Got something to say?
